Love this one of him sleeping in his daddy's arm.

Newborns are best photographed between 5 and 10 days old so I ask all my clients to include me in their email when they announce their new arrival to friends and family. My first thought when I received the email about this little one is that she has such a beautiful face and I couldn't wait to photograph her.
Her parents wanted to make sure we got some of those sleepy baby photographs - my favourite kind! Check and mark.

I absolutely love the dreamy look of this next one.

Does she not have fabulously big baby blues? Her mama told me about them but since Miss C was sleeping when I arrived, I didn't get to experience them for myself until halfway through the session. I've never had a baby go from complete sleep to wide-eyed and smiling back to complete sleep in such a short amount of time.

This one made me laugh. Okay photographer lady, not sure about being wrapped up like a burrito like this. And boy did she fight it. I had to be quick for these shots because, even with my super baby-swaddling skills, she still made a great Houndini.

Thanks so much for inviting me into your home.
Great shots Jenn, the "burrito" one is so adorable, lol
Love them so far! Can't wait to see the rest.
Gorgeous photos! I love the fist wide awake one...she's so adorable!!
I love the wings on dad's shirt in behind his son.

WOW! I just love the one of Dad and baby with the tattoos and shirt - it is exactly the type of shot I was envisioning.... and yes the dog in this one is not exactly into the baby yet - she basically ignores him right now! yet she always wants to lie near us so I think she is warming up. Can't wait to see the rest of the pictures!
I love his little fist while everything else is just dangling. So cute!!
I had the pleasure of photographing this little guy and his family in their gorgeous Yaletown condo last week.

And because he was such an amazing eater, there was lots of time to photograph his big sister.

Aren't her glasses gorgeous? She picked them out herself. And everytime they went into the store, she picked out the same ones. That's a girl who knows her own mind.

And yes, I would have smuggled this gorgeous chair out of there if I thought I could have gotten away with it.
Mister G was still feeding so time for some shots of daddy and his little girl.

One of my favourite parts of newborn shoots is hearing about the birth story - and this one was probably the most beautiful one I've heard. Lately a lot of the families I photograph have delivered with Pacific Midwifery and I've been so impressed with everything I've heard.

His mama is a huge proponent of babywearing and has the most gorgoues selection of baby wraps. I tried to wear Angelo when he was first born but quickly got frustrated with it. I wish now I'd tried harder. She turned me on to TheBabyWearer website which has loads of great information that I'll definitely be using when we have another one.

Hello bright eyes!

And because of all the feeding I know his mama was worried we didn't get any sleepy baby photographs. Don't worry, we definitely did. And I think the one on the right is one of my new favourites.

Thanks again for the privilege of photographing your growing family!
Jenn they are gorgeous! I love one on the bottom left, too precious!
awwww, jen! wonderful photos! i absolutely LOVE the bottom two!
That little girl is too cute!!! I love her glasses. And gorgeous baby shots! I agree...that bottom right one is perfect! I can imagine it blown up big on the wall.
Little Miss K was right at the end of where we usually get lots of sleepy baby time but she was an absolute dream for our session.

I told you she was an amazing sleeper.

Gorgeous! These are amazing photos! She is a cutie!
OH MY GOODNESS!!! CUTEST PICTURES EVER! jenn, truly amazing photos you took of my little niece Kensie... ! :)
Jenn, I LOVE your light in these!! You totally have it going on with the newborn pics! YUM!
All I can say is 'WOW'!!

Hats can be really fun for a few of the images too. I have some I'll bring along but if you've picked up one or two (or ten) bring them out for your session and we can incorporate them.
Don't worry about your little one being cold - we're going to have the heat cranked.
Now that we have your baby sorted out... on to you. I know I'm usually an advocate for colour but newborn sessions are one place where neutral tends to be best. In general, a plain white, black or coloured t-shirt or tank along with jeans, nicer black leggings or yoga pants is great for mom. A plain tee with jeans usually works best for dad.
Since we're going to be inside your house and it's going to be hot, bare feet are a good option. If you're going to wear socks, please make sure they are a similar colour to your pants.
Newborn sessions tend to be fairly simple to dress for but if you have any questions, please put them in the comments or send me an email and I'll post the answer here for everyone.
Coming soon... part 3: maternity sessions.
I love that you're covering all of this. :) Takes the mystery/stress out of prepping... at least a little bit. ;)
Yes, thanks for these tips, Jenn. Very handy info!

He really is adorable! I love how alert he is when he's awake! And that cocoon he's in is too cute! I bet the parents are just going to adore these photos!

Oh, he looks absolutely perfect! I love that he has his thumb in his mouth...soooo cute!!! The light and focus are amazing!
